Robert Hesse Youngstown Yacht Club - Owner of IC37 Zing

Without a competitor, Canada’s Cup wouldn’t be a race. This year, Zing–hull number 28, will be representing Youngstown Yacht Club.

Owner, Robert (Bob) Hesse has been sailing for over 40 years, from Youngstown, his hometown. Bob shared that Youngstown's is the “prettiest place on the lake”, and that it’s a small town with a population of around 2000, it’s out of the way even for people from nearby Buffalo, and he likes that. There are no docks at YYC, only mooring balls and with about 60 boats in total, taxi boats ferry the members back and forth from club to boat and back again.

Bob has sailed in the One Design 35 boat program for 5 years and also had a Mengus 32 for about 6 years. He shared that he has participated in the Key West race week about 10 times, and has participated in a bunch of classes as well as stand alone events. The Nationals in San Francisco also is on the list of his racing experience.

Bob decided to take the plunge and get the IC37 after being hit three times at the J111 Nations, he decided to switch classes. When it was announced that the Canada Cup would be in IC37’s it made the decision of which class to join easy. He was also attracted to the Melges 37, because he could sail with his daughter, Bridget (39 yrs). She’s doing a tremendous job of keeping the team working together from the pit.

Bob arranged for Zing to make its way to Newport in the fall of 2019, and when it didn’t sound like there would be much sailing going on, he brought it to YYC, only having sailed once in Newport. Zing isn’t his only boat, he keeps a powerboat down south in Florida, but Zing is his only sailboat.

The border being closed has hindered practicing with another IC37, and despite the difficulties of being able to plan anything, he is still hopeful. As the border just opened to Americans coming into Canada, despite some uncertainties, he’s not doing anything different. On August 15th he will send the entrance fee.
