Defiant's Journey

Defiant's Journey

As mentioned in last week's blog post about boat owner, Paul L’Heureux, Defiant was THE last off the line at Westerly Marine in Santa Ana, California.

This is the story of how Defiant was built, assembled and her journey to Toronto.

The Melges IC37 start by building the tiller first. Below is the vacuum mould for the carbon fibre tiller.

This is a page from the build binder that records each step along the process to build the multitude of pieces on Defiant.

Fibreglass and carbon fibre manufacturing requires moulds to make the pieces. Moulds are the reverse or inverse shape of the part being made.

At almost 38’ long these two mould pieces are bolted together and the fibreglass is laid up inside to form the hull.

The cruciform is the main structural element of the IC37. It connects the keel box and the left and right side hull sections together. The main forces of stress while sailing Defiant are absorbed and spread across different sections of the hull.

Below is Defiant’s deck prior to be attached to her hull.

Once completed, Defiant left the Westerly Marine yard in Santa Ana for her 2600 mile trip to Toronto.

Finally, Defiant safely arrived in Outer Harbour Marina in Toronto on July 24, 2020.
