HERITAGE

MISSION
The mission of the RCYC Archives is to identify, acquire, preserve, and make available records and materials of enduring value to the Club and its Members.

The Heritage Committee, working with the Club’s Archivist and Curator, supports the collection and preservation of art and artefacts that speak to our past and present.

SERVICE TO MEMBERS AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY:

  • Tours of the City and Island Clubhouses for Members (no fee) and Corporations (fee-based)
  • Annual Heritage Dinner, Theme Dinners, Events and Workshops (artefact preservation and maintenance)
  • Outreach
  • Annual Donor and Volunteer Reception

ROLES OF VOLUNTEERS AND FRIENDS OF HERITAGE
Volunteer on the Heritage Committee or from time to time. 

HERITAGE TRUST FUND
DONATIONS are welcome and used for the Preservation of the collection (proper housing and protection of holdings) and Conservation (repair and restoration of damaged and deteriorated artefacts).

 

CURATOR & ARCHIVIST

The Club’s Archivist and Curator works in collaboration with the Heritage Committee to advance the Heritage Program. The Archivist/Curator manages the day-to-day operations of the collections in the City and Island Clubhouses.

RCYC ARCHIVES ORIGINS

  • RCYC did not always have an Archive.
  • 1978 - Peter B. Edwards established a Marine Library.
  • 1979 - appointed Honorary Historian.
  • Heritage Committee active since 1982.
  • The Archives is associated with local Universities and Colleges: York University, University of Toronto, Seneca College.
  • The Archivist hosts student placements in library and archival programs.
  • Archive research services are available to Members and the public (donations accepted for lengthy research inquiries).

DONATIONS
The Club relies on the generous donations of Members to grow the collection. Only those items having a demonstrable link or relevance to the Club are to be acquired or retained in the RCYC holdings.
