This August the Opti Race Team competes in the two most important regattas of the season: CORK International and Canadian Optimist Champs in Squamish, BC. Last week we were in Kingston for CORK.
We had three days of training before the CORK regatta. Racing started on Friday and continued until Sunday. There was nice breeze on Friday at first (8 - 10 knots) but became light with large shifts by the third race. Saturday was very hot and sunny and breeze was very light which made racing very challenging. Friday and Saturday were qualifying days (5 races) and sailors were ranked into Gold, Silver or Bronze for Sunday’s final races. I sailed pretty well but there were some of the best sailors from the US competing and the conditions were really challenging and I did not make my goal to compete in Gold fleet. Sunday I raced well and finished second in Silver fleet and overall I came 52 out of 149 boats.
I had a fantastic experience at CORK which is great preparation for Canadians next week where about 100 Canadian Opti sailors will compete.
I would like to thank my coaches, Osvaldo Padron and Jared Collinson, for their support and coaching and also my parents. And I would like to thank the RCYC and the ADF for helping my goals for this summer come true.
