This will be my 10th Laser Worlds, having only missed one since my first on St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia in 2009.
In the beginning of June I had an intense ten-day pre-worlds camp in Warnemunde, Germany. I sailed with NOR, FIN, GER, and SWE and we were all staying together at the club which was equipped with meeting rooms, a cafeteria, and a gym. Since we were all staying together and had everything we needed on site, we could be very efficient, getting the most out of our time both on and off the water. Warnemunde served up a variety of conditions and it left me feeling as well prepared as possible for the Worlds.
The Laser Worlds is a mandatory charter event, meaning that all the competitors must use the brand new, supplied boats, mast, boom, rudder and centerboard. We only bring our own “soft rigging” – ropes, blocks, tillers and sail. This is to ensure the one-design principle of the Laser class. Overall, this is a great system, but of course it comes at an added cost. The RCYC Athlete Development Fund’s support is allowing me to compete in this event by covering the cost of the entry and charter fee. Thank you to the Club and all of the Members for its continued support of Olympic sailing!
There is plenty more coming up later this summer with the Pan American Games and the Olympic Test Event happening in July and August.
