An Invitation to Support The 2021 Canada’s Cup Defense Campaign

With the 25th Canada’s Cup being hosted by RCYC on September 2nd to 5th Team Defiant, representing RCYC in the defense of the Cup, seeks your support.

The campaign budget is substantial, and this does not include the two Melges IC37s Defiant and Vigilant that have been made available by the generosity of members Paul L’Heureux and David Howard & John Hele.

The Youngstown Yacht Club is the official challenger this year.

Information on how to support Team Defiant can be found below. Suggested contributions level can be found here.  See also “More on the Canada’s Cup”.

How To Donate

Tax deductible donations to the campaign can be made through the Team Defiant – RCYC 2021 Canada’s Cup Defense account at Wind Athletes Canada. Click here for the donation form.

The preferred method of donation is either:

 i) by cheque made out to Wind Athletes Canada and mailed to the Kingston address on the top of the donation form

ii) by Interac e-Transfer sent to the email address info@windathletes.ca and writing as the message “Team Defiant – RCYC 2021 Canada’s Cup Defense” to ensure that the donation goes into the correct account.

Both these methods of donation require the inclusion of the filled-out donation form. They incur a 4% administration fee.

The less preferred method of donation, but still very much appreciated, is to go through the WAC website at TEAM DEFIANT - RCYC 2021 Canada's Cup Defense | Wind Athletes Canada to donate by credit card or PayPal. These methods incur a 7% total fee.

If you have any questions about donating, or the campaign in general, please contact Terry at terrymclaughlin@sympatico.ca.

More on The Canada’s Cup

The Canada’s Cup is a match racing event between Canadian Great Lakes clubs and US Great Lakes clubs. The Cup was first contested in 1896 when the RCYC yacht Canada bested the US yacht Vencedor representing the Lincoln Park Yacht Club in Chicago. In total, there have been 24 matches, with the US leading Canada in victories 13-11. Over the years, the Cup has been contested under the P-class Universal Rule, the Eight Metre International Rule, the International Offshore Rule and the MORC Rule. In 2001, the Cup adopted, for the first time, a one design class, the Farr 40. The contests between the equal boats provided very close match racing. The last Cup held was in 2016 in modern Eight Metres and was won by RCYC’s Bryan Gooderham and his team sailing Hollandia.

The Canada’s Cup will be held September 2nd to 5th for the first time in identical Melges IC37s. Not only will the boats be the same, but by class rules so will the sails and rig tuning. Class rules state that two members of the opposite gender are to be part of the crew. For this year’s Canada’s Cup, both teams will be permitted to have one 16 or under youth sailor on the boat, who will not be included in the overall crew weight limit of 686 kilos.

We are fortunate to have the two IC37s Defiant and Vigilant at the Club this summer. This allows us to conduct a two-boat training program to work on speed testing, crew work and match racing. The boats are also being used on non-Cup practicing days to train many Club members on how to crew on a modern racing boat.
